Mediation Programme
IDCR-GLEAMED Mediation Programme
The Institute for Democracy and Conflict Resolution (IDCR) and Greater London and East Anglia Mediation (GLEAMED) have developed a joint mediation programme.
The IDCR specialises in research and policy analysis of the root causes of conflict and disputes, signposting of the social and cultural considerations that need to be recognised and modelling of options to help facilitate the settlement process. It draws on 50 years of teaching, research, and practical work carried out by academic staff in the social sciences, law and business school.
GLEAMED specializes in providing mediation services to settle disputes throughout East Anglia, the adjacent London Boroughs, and internationally. It covers all types of dispute and can handle international, commercial and civil (including contractual, boundary, property, personal injury, professional negligence), workplace and employment, family (including co-habitation) and community matters, which can be referred to us by individuals, firms, organisations, or the courts.
What is Mediation?
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), of which Mediation forms an important part, provides an alternative to Court litigation offering a faster and less expensive way of resolving disputes. The process is governed by a Mediation Agreement and Rules, and a Mediation Settlement is enforceable if written down and signed by those concerned.
Mediation is a well-established process for resolving disagreements in which an impartial third-party (the Mediator) helps people in dispute to find a mutually acceptable resolution using a faster, less costly and stressful alternative to a Court hearing. Everything discussed in a mediation remains confidential and is without prejudice to any subsequent proceedings.
For international disputes, mediation provides a peaceful route to reaching agreement and consensus between two or more affected parties (i.e. states or sub-national entities). Mediated outcomes achieve significant ‘buy in’ from key stakeholders in any dispute and are applicable to a wide range of international conflicts over a variety of different issue areas.
Informed Mediation
The partnership between IDCR and GLEAMED provides mediation that is backed by academic analysis on the root causes of a dispute, evidence on the claims made by the disputants, and an array of possible solutions that can be used by mediators with the affected parties. The close physical proximity of the two organisations (both are based in Colchester, Essex) along with the pool of academic and practical expertise provides a sound foundation for the mediation programme.
GLEAMED has its own panel of experienced, accredited and insured Mediators, and well established links to a wider community of similar, external Mediators. GLEAMED mediators are members of either the Civil Mediation Council or a recognised member organisation of the Family Mediation Council, meet required training standards, are fully insured, adhere to the European Union Code of Practice for Mediators, and come from a variety of professional backgrounds.
Mediation Training
IDCR and GLEAMED have developed training programmes in mediation that will be used in a short course on mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution being offered in Summer 2011 and in partnership with Essex County Council a legal training coursefor the Law and Politics Commission of Jiangsu Province in China in Autumn 2011.
