Anti-Government Networks and Civil Conflict

On Wednesday 23 November 2011, the IDCR hosted a seminar by Nils Metternich on civil conflicts in Thailand. The paper is part of a larger project on the relationship between anti-government newtorks and civil conflicts, where the analysis of time series data on conflictual and coooperative behaviour in Thailand shows that the strength of networks is postively related to a reduction in violence from the government.

Dr Metternich received his PhD from the Department of Government at the University of Essex and is now a Post-Doc in the Department of Political Sciemce at Duke University. The paper is co-authored with Cassy Dorff, Max Gallop, Simon Waschle and Micheal D. Ward and can be accessed here:

IDCR Trains Parliamentarians from Mozambique

Building on its continued work with the Westminster Consortium for Strengthening Parliaments and Democracy (TWC), the IDCR will deliver two days of training to two delegations from the Parliament of Mozambique this week and next.

Led by Professor Todd Landman (IDCR) and Dr Tom Scotto (Department of Government), the training concerns the use of social science evidence in the legislative process and an analysis of national-local governmental relations.

The training has been piloted in Ukraine in October and will also be delivered in other TWC countries, such as Uganda, Georgia, and Lebanon.
